Graduate student Grace Locke moves from the Midwest to New York City to complete her Masters degree in Criminology. She longs to one day be a college professor. It is a field that is dominated by men. She is worried about succeeding in such an atmosphere. Past sexual relationships have caused her to feel intimidated. Her experiences with college men have left her jaded and unsatisfied. She gives herself a challenge. Time to toughen up or she won’t make it in a career she yearns for. She decides to surround herself with alpha males so that she can practice becoming what she sees as a strong confident woman. She finds power and defiance in her new attitude……..until Vinnie.
When Grace takes a part time secretarial job at a private investigator office, she assumes it will be interesting to watch how the cases unfold. It is close to her campus apartment and gives her the extra cash she needs as a struggling college student. Even more perfect is that the office is surrounded by street wise hardened males. Now, she can get the needed practice at increasing her confidence among men. She wasn’t prepared for Vinnie Lewis. A former hit man who decides to go straight, he is the ultimate “bad boy”. After growing up with a prostitute mother on the streets of New York City, he has no patience for nice girls like Grace. He is difficult to work with. She finds him just plain scary with his six foot four frame, bulging biceps, and a scar from a former knife fight that goes across his right ear to his chin. She shakes in his presence but then ……. is shocked when she can’t stop thinking of him.
*****Warning. Contains graphic sex scenes. For adults only****
I am blown away by this book!! I read several books a week and I typically range between liking a book a little and liking a book a lot, but it’s very unusual for me to be heartbroken because I’m done with a book. I am heartbroken! Nice Girl is the 1st book in the Girl Series by Kate Baum and what a great book it is.
The series will revolve around 4 friends with very different personalities. You have the nice one, the brave one, the funny one, and the smart one. Each girl embarks on their own journey and follows their own dream, yet they always have each other.
Grace Locke is tired of being the nice girl. She never goes out on a limb or rocks the boat and she is the first to feel someone else’s pain. That’s why when she decides to move from her Midwestern refuge to New York to complete her masters in criminology everyone is shocked. Little do they know she plans to change more than her career. She’s ready to be fearless and powerful. Needing a part time job she finds herself thrust into an interview at an office for private investigators. Her first instinct is to run as fast as she can, but then she remembers her personal challenge to be fearless and powerful. What better place to put this into practice than an office filled with alpha men? She finds herself loving everything about her new job, especially her wonderfully eccentric, quirky co-workers. Vinnie is the one hitch in her day. He makes her heart race, her palms sweat, he makes her forget her challenge and just about everything else. She quickly learns that he needs her as much as she needs him.
Vinnie Lewis has had a hard life. His childhood was the worst and his adulthood wasn't much better. He was the muscle when things needed to get done. He was even a hit man for awhile. When he and his best friend decided to open their own private investigating firm, they vowed to make changes and change he did. Vinnie still has his demons, but he’s doing his best. That’s why when he meets Grace Locke he is thrown for a loop. Women are a source of quick and easy pleasure. They aren’t worth a second thought, let alone respect or attention. So, why does Grace make him feel protective and intrigued?
“Don’t you know this will be new for me, too?” Vinnie laid me back on the bed. “ I've fucked a lot of women, but I've never made love. You will be my first.”
Seriously, read this book! The story is great, but the supporting characters are just as good. You’ll find yourself laughing out loud. This book has it all. I cried, I laughed and I hurt. It sucks you in and makes you feel. Remember you have been warned!
A special thank you to Kate Baum for the loan of this book in exchange for my honest review.
