Recipe for a Sheikh

If you're like me, the desert sheikh is your drug of choice. He's hot, he's loaded, and he's not afraid to tell you exactly what he wants--YOU. He won't hesitate to overcome your objections with the fury of his personality. He decides what he desires and will do anything to get it. Even if that means pushing the limits on what other people might find acceptable.

Not many people realize that the sheikh is the original tall, dark, and handsome romance hero. In 1919, E.M. Hull first introduced him in her book, The Sheik (http://amzn.to/ysRJZ0). The Sheik was a huge success and became a silent movie starring Rudolf Valentino in 1921. Some people say that Hull's The Sheikh was really the first modern romance novel.

Are you thinking of cooking yourself up a desert sheikh? Good idea! Who doesn't love a wildly handsome, insanely rich, passionate hero with the hot winds of the Sahara boiling the blood in his veins?

If that's your goal, here's my recipe:

Take:

• One gorgeous hunk of a man (Thick black hair and eyes dark as the desert sky at night are not optional);

• One part arrogance;

• One part entitlement;

• One part expectation of being obeyed; and

• A generous dash of possessiveness.

Make sure you don't accidentally add any willingness to compromise or the desire to see other people's points of view! The entire batch will be ruined and you will have to start over.

Stir ingredients together. When the mixture forms a thick batter, fold in:

• Gobs of oil money;

• A wicked tan;

• Lips that would tempt a nun to sin;

• A dark past; and

• Emotional scars.

Don't forget to add a forbidding temper and a dislike of being contradicted. Ensure that he is completely competent in every way. Your sheikh should never need the advice or skills of any other person--or at least he should never think he needs them.

You may want to consider the following optional ingredients:

• The weight of running a country on his shoulders;

• Physical scars that only add to his rugged male beauty;

• The ability to pull off a sexy, sexy abduction;

• An 'h' for the end of 'sheikh';

• Past emotional betrayals by others; and

• A distrust of women.

Bake for 25-40 years in the desert heat of an exotic foreign country. Check every six months to ensure that the taut, firm muscles are developing properly.

Serve hot, with a woman who is as defiant as he is demanding!

Warning

Before you cook up your sheikh, make sure you can handle what you get. You may find yourself stuck with the most arrogant, demanding, frustrating male you've ever met.

If you do, bear one thing in mind. The sheikh's hard crust hides an inner softness he will never admit. Deep inside his shell, below the layer of smoldering sex, lies a core of emotional vulnerability, a desire for connection with someone who sees through the coating designed to keep others at a distance.

But if you can crack that (yummy looking!) outer shell, you will get the tastiest reward of your life. An ooey, gooey, delicious, over-protective, hero who will stop at nothing to make you the happiest woman on Earth.
